Faculty and staff, how do you get along with your colleagues and your supervisor? Students, what are your thoughts about inclusiveness at the University of Illinois?

University of Illinois faculty, staff and students are being asked to fill out a survey in the coming weeks about the climate on the three UI campuses.

The university started sending e-mails to people on Wednesday inviting them to fill out the survey online. Eric Smith, assistant vice president for equal opportunity and human resources, said they're aiming for everyone to receive the e-mail invitation by Thursday.

"About a year ago President (Michael) Hogan wanted to get a sense of what the climate was on each of the three campuses and to get input from students, faculty and staff," Smith said.

The effort is believed to be the first-ever university-wide climate survey presented to students, faculty and staff.

In his message to the university community on the survey website, Hogan said the survey will provide "a benchmark for the University of Illinois to gauge perceptions and help us respond to concerns of the campus community."

The survey was developed by the UI Survey Research Laboratory and a Climate Survey Advisory Group made up of faculty and staff from the campuses and university administration.

The e-mail will contain a unique link for the person to take the survey. The university will also issue paper versions of the survey to those who do not have access to computers or e-mail.

People will be asked to provide demographic information as well as answer questions about inclusiveness, friendliness, cooperation, support, opportunities for career advancement or academic success and more.

It should take about 10 to 15 minutes to finish.

The survey will be available for about a month. It will end on Nov. 23.

As for the response rate, "statistically 30 percent would be significant. We're hoping for something greater than that," Smith said.

After the survey closes, the Survey Research Laboratory will conduct its analysis and complete a report by April. That report will be posted on the university's website. Some town hall meetings may be held.

In addition, "President Hogan will convene a group of individuals across the university to look at the results and make recommendations," Smith said.
