C-U edges closer to October rainfall record
CHAMPAIGN — Overnight rainfall boosted October’s precipitation total to 7.96 inches, enough to make this the second-wettest October on record in Champaign-Urbana.
And there’s still an outside chance that predicted heavy rains today could make October 2009 the record-setter for most rainfall. The record is 9.01 inches, set in 1941.
The Illinois State Water Survey has local weather records dating to 1888.
Previously, the second-wettest October locally was in 1949 when there was 7.78 inches of rain.
Rainfall at the water survey’s south Champaign recording station totalled eight-tenths of an inch for the period ending at 8 a.m. today.
So far this month in Champaign-Urbana it has rained 20 of 30 days.
