Storms knock out power to 660,000 in Illinois
CHICAGO (AP) — Strong winds and rain pounded Illinois, knocking out power to 660,000 utility customers in northern Illinois and ripping roofs off two buildings in a suburban Chicago apartment complex.
About 100 residents were forced to leave the Waukegan apartments. There were no serious injuries.
ComEd reports that the largest number of outages are north of Chicago where 298,000 customers were without power. Power was also out Monday for 156,000 customers west of the city, 90,000 in the southern region and 116,000 in the city of Chicago and Maywood.
ComEd has nearly 400 repair crews out trying to restore service.
The fast-moving storm downed trees, damaged property and hampered travel throughout the Chicago area. Airlines report delays at both O’Hare and Midway airports and more than 100 flight cancellations at O’Hare.
