Champaign sees first dip below zero in 34 months

CHAMPAIGN — The temperature dropped to minus 3 degrees early Thursday morning in Champaign, the first below-zero reading here in about 34 months.

The last below-zero reading at the Illinois State Water Survey's weather station in south Champaign was -12 on Feb. 10, 2011.

This morning's minus 3 reading at 4:28 a.m. is not a record low for the date. The coldest reading on Dec. 12 was minus 7 in 1962.

The National Weather Service is predicting moderating temperatures, but no above-freezing readings are expected until Tuesday at the earliest.

In the meantime, the forecast calls for up to 5 inches of snow Friday night and Saturday morning.
