We asked and you answered: Here's where the potholes are

Potholes got so bad this week that Urbana decided to close part of Windsor Road to try to repair major damage there.

To get an idea of what the road was like, check out this video by News-Gazette reporter Patrick Wade and photographer Rick Danzl.

Several weeks ago, after a brutal stretch of cold weather, Wade wrote that winter was wreaking havoc on city streets and the cities fill thousands of potholes every year. 

Extreme temperature swings in early January, from 14 below zero one day to 40 degrees above the next, made the problem worse, officials said at the time.

Since the freeze-thaw began in January, we've asked News-Gazette readers to list potholes they've encountered. And city officials have online ways for citizens to report them as well.

Wade also wrote in mid-January that if your car has been damaged by a pothole, you probably shouldn't count on the city for help covering the cost of repairs.

Here are the submissions from readers from noon Tuesday, Feb. 18, through 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20:

— Windsor between Philo and Lincoln is starting to resemble a relief map of the moon. They aren't potholes, they're craters.

— I-57 bridge on Bradley Ave.

— Heading south on Neil Street (in the right lane) somewhere not far north of downtown.

— Mattis Avenue from Springfield Ave. to Bradley Ave. Country Fair Drive from Springfield Ave to Bradley Ave.

— Springfield Ave in Urbana between Lincoln and Race streets

— There is a very deep pothole on Prospect between the railroad tracks and Church st. Southbound!

— Southbound Prospect Ave, between Washington and Columbia, curb lane. About the size of a Jeep.

— John street between Prospect and Mattis

— Windsor Road is riddled with waves of uneven asphalt waves and potholes all up and down from Philo Road up to Mattis. My drive yesterday was so bad, I would have selected a very coarse gravel road instead. I will have to get my car realigned because of all those deep holes. The worst ones,as I recall, were between Philo Rd and Neil Street.

— Eastbound on Springfield Ave between Prospect Ave and Neil Street. Several potholes and 3 or 4 really big ones. They opened up a lot more since yesterday.

— On Cunningham Ave in the Right southbound lane between Perkens Rd and University so many potholes and they are huge! They could take a wheel off.

— Located on Francis Drive just east of McKinley Ave. Big pothole in front of the apartment building.

— PROSPECT! All the way between Kirby and Bradley, Prospect is littered with potholes in the right hand lanes going north and south. The potholes are huge and are incredibly difficult to avoid if you drive in the right hand lanes. On 2/18 I hit a pothole that was filled with water (so it didn't look like pothole, just standing water) which resulted in $1000 in damage—two new tires and a completely new rim; and all after waiting two hours on a tow truck. This happened going about 15 mph right before the light at Prospect and Springfield. THANKS A LOT, CITY OF CHAMPAIGN.

— South State Street in Champaign is horrible, as is Mattis north of University. Main Street in downtown Champaign is getting worse

— Vine Street, northbound right-hand lane, immediately north of intersection with Main Street. Very large, tire eating, axle ripping, section of pavement - gone.

— On Prospect (going south) between Church and University. Also a big old pothole as you're turning left off of Church onto Mattis (going to Schnuck's)

— Southbound Neil St. on the north side of the intersection with Springfield. It's big enough that it is definitely slowing traffic especially at the evening drive hour.

— Southbound on Vine Street near Holmes Drive, a very big, deep hole. My tire is flat, waiting to have it looked over tomorrow to see what other damage.

— Neil St. at Springfield, southbound lanes ... huge dangerous crater.

— Mayfair Road just north of Kirby Ave.

— Mattis Ave. between Bloomington Rd and Bradley Ave.

— On State Street, three to four blocks before Hessel.

— Rt 45, Tolono viaduct. Lots of deep holes in southbound lane. Cars are slowing down and swerving to avoid.

— 300 block of south fair champaign between Springfield avenune & union street in northbound lane.

— 1400 block of W Green St, Urbana,inside Westbound lane - large pothole in crosswalk in front of Illini Union

— 4th st and Daniel St-south west corner; Corner of Wright and Washington St-south west corner

— Parkland college entrance off of Mattis. Parkland Way is terrible with pot holes

— On Perkins Rd in Urbana by Rowena Dr.

— Inside lane of Neil St. Southbound on North side of overpass (over I-74).

— Rt 136 Rantoul, from I 57 exit 250 to the railroad viaduct. Many, many bad holes, particularly under the viaduct.

— Mattis avenue between Springfield and Bloomington Rd is absolutely TERRIBLE. It's so bad I don't know how they're leaving the street open!

— Green Street by the viaduct just past Neil. There are a ton of them.

— Corner of Interstate Drive and Farber Drive.

There might be a bigger story here than meets the eye. The damage to our roads this year is so severe, the cost of repair on the city and county governments is going to throw some budgets into deficit spending if the citizenry demands it all be fixed right away. The other interesting facet is that some roads in need of repair were just recently "fixed" or "repaved" within the last two years; giving us some idea as to whether our current road technology is using best practices.

A discussion with the experts at the U of I in the materials lab might discover that our local governments use the "cheapest" methods for road repair, but they might not be the best, and really our techniques and materials are 1950's-stupid. I've noticed that the quick fills with the tar and gravel mix are already giving way where the patch is now crumbling too. Another irony: our big snow plows and dump trucks we think so great at quick snow removal are actually causing more permanent damage to the roads than is worth the fast clearance we demand.

And the dirty secret few will talk about is that having more and more MTD buses (often empty and underutilized buses late at night) running more routes to accomodate the free/student fee population taking their 3-block trips, reeks havoc on the roads year after year.  

The new boom job in these "hard economic times" is public works. The work is going to be endless for the next 3 years...and what few realize is the greatest percentage of your local tax dollar is spent having smooth roads for your car tires. We really are "just spinning our wheels" when it comes to local governance.

Maybe the better question is where are there no potholes--the list would be much shorter.  :-)

Not only do we have huge gaping holes in the pavement, there are some big buckles out there too. I'd be interested to hear what is going on with the buckle at Mattis and Bradley, in front of Kraft. At first it was thought maybe it was a water main break. Then maybe a gas line break. It's been blocked for nearly a week, what is the status? And the cause?

I'm sure someone can tell me why I am wrong, but it seems to me that the brick streets are in better shape than the paved ones.  Why don't we go back to brick streets, at least for those with slower speed limits?  I realize that main thoroughfares would be too rough if traveled at 45 mph on bricks, but it seems like neighborhood streets where the speed limit is 30 mph or less could be brick.  While it wouldn't solve all the problems, it might be one piece of the solution.
