April warmed things up

CHAMPAIGN — Breaking a five-month cooling streak, April temperatures in Champaign-Urbana were slightly above normal.

The average temperature in April was 53 degrees, one degree above normal. It was the first time since October (when temperatures were 1.1 degrees above average) that local temperatures were warmer than average. The low point this winter came in February, when temperatures were 9.9 degrees below normal, according to the Illinois State Water Survey.

Precipitation for the month was slightly above average: 3.94 inches versus the average of 3.68 inches, according to water survey records. There was two-tenths of an inch of snow on April 15, plus a trace of snow the following day.

The highest official reading in Champaign-Urbana last month was 79 degrees on April 26. The lowest reading was 27 degrees on April 16. There were four days when the thermometer dropped below freezing, the latest a 30-degree reading on April 17.

The average date of the last spring frost in Champaign-Urbana is April 15, according to the water survey.
