Of my many memories of Lloyd, my favorite one is the time he called me when I was a senior at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville on a Sunday night, the first time I had spoken with him. When I answered the phone, he said, in his distinctly nasal speech tone, Is this Earl B. Russell?
I said, Yes, it is.
He said, This is Lloyd J. Phipps in the Division of Agricultural Education at the University of Illinois and I want to offer you a half-time graduate research assistantship.
Every word was precisely enunciated. This was the start of the 47 years I knew Lloyd, and it was an honor to know him. He provided steadfast support to the AgEd faculty when I was there from 1980-1995. It's an honor to contribute to the Lloyd Phipps Fund at the U of I.
