URBANA – Frederick "Fred" McGavran, 54, passed away at 10:55 p.m. Sunday, May 9, 2010, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Fred was born on Jan. 19, 1956, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Julia McGavran.
Surviving Fred are his parents; two daughters, Dawn Price (Ray) and Amanda Hopkins (Matt); two granddaughters, Julia and Maria Hopkins; two sisters, Jacqueline McGavran and Julie Savignac (Sam Feinberg); a brother, Franklin McGavran; five nephews, Mark, Andrew and Sam Savignac, Matt Feinberg, and Walt McGavran; and two nieces, Marissa McGavran Barnett and Alice McGavran; along with neighbors and friends.
Fred was a member of the New Life Church of Faith in Urbana. He attended schools in Urbana and college at Southeastern Illinois College. He was an over-the-road truck driver, worked in construction and in recent years was a barber at First Street Barber Shop in Champaign. He became an avid gardener while being treated for small-cell lung cancer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 17, 2010, at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St., C, with visitation from 10 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Champaign.
Memorials may be mailed or delivered at the funeral home to the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club, 201 E. Park Ave., C; the American Cancer Society; or a charity of the donor's choice.
