CHAMPAIGN – Alice Wyers von Neumann, after improving the lives of children through her career in social work, pursued a passion for world travel, experiencing the people and places which enriched her life and those around her.

Alice von Neumann died peacefully in her home on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, at the age of 81.

Alice von Neumann enjoyed a full life, including extensive travel, swimming, tennis, reading, crossword puzzles, music and her gourmet cooking group. She was an active member of the League of Women Voters, Champaign County Democrats and the National Education Association.

During her career as a social worker, she worked for the Institute for Childhood Behavior and Development, Children's Research Center, Urbana public schools and Vermilion County.

Ms. von Neumann was born in Chicago on Nov. 20, 1928, to Renier and Marguerite Wyers. After receiving a bachelor of science in art from the University of Wisconsin and a master's of social work from the University of Illinois, she remained in Champaign for the remainder of her life.

Ms. von Neumann was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Albert Wattenberg. She is survived by her children, Michael von Neumann (Nancy Krolick von Neumann) of Atlanta, Ga., Ric von Neumann (Libby Sadick) of Dwight, Ontario, Canada, and Erik von Neumann (Jan Mallis) of Ballina, Australia; her grandson, Maximillian Thor von Neumann of Ballina, Australia; her sister, Frances Wyers, of Majorca, Spain; and her nephew, David Weber, of Majorca, Spain.
