ATWOOD – Hayden Junior "Pappy" West, 83, of Atwood, formerly of Red Boiling Springs, Tenn., went to Heaven to be with his wife Dorothy Joan at 1 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 12, 2012).
He had received the Lord as his Savior and passed gently after visiting with his family for several days. Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, Atwood, is in charge of arrangements.
Private services will be held at Mackville Cemetery, Atwood, at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17.
He was always a kind man and a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather to his children. He carried on for his family for 33 years after losing his wife.
Mr. West was born on May 20, 1928, in Smith County, Tenn., son of Erby D. "Bowser" and Eula Mae Halliburton West. He married Dorothy Joan "Joann" Brown on Oct. 6, 1948, in Rossville, Ga. They lived in Tennessee before moving to Illinois in 1965. She preceded him in death on May 10, 1979.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, brothers Lloyd, JW, Floyd, Harrison and sister Virginia.
He is survived by his five children, Daniel West of Atwood and family (Steven, Sandy, Jeremy, Denny and eight great-grandchildren), David West of Decatur and family (Lisa, Brian, Cathy, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild), Douglas West (wife Dianna) of Atwood and family (Danny, Darin, Debra, and five great-grandchildren), Deanna West McDonald (husband Neil) of Tuscola and family (Dawna, Benjamin and two great-grandchildren), Dennis West (wife Debbie) of Atwood and family (Mandi, Stephanie and one great-grandchild).
Also surviving are brothers, Prentice West (Shirley) and Kenneth West (Barbara); sisters, Ann Harrison and Cornelia Swindle; and sister-in-law, Jean West, all of Tennessee. He was blessed with many more relatives and friends and loved them all!
Mr. West worked several jobs, often two at a time, to provide for his family, most recently at Cabot Corp. in Tuscola. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and being with family and friends.
Flowers are expensive and they do not last. In lieu of flowers, please donate memorial funds c/o Hayden West, "Pappy" at the First State Bank of Atwood for our fire department and EMTs, or directly to the Atwood Fire Department and EMTs. They volunteer their time away from their families, unselfishly, for us and our families. If we do not support those services, we will lose them and they are always there before anyone else! Dad was thankful for them.
