RANKIN – John W. Schweizer, 58, of rural Rankin died Saturday (May 5, 2012) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 10, at Baier Family Funeral Services, 406 E. Pells St., Paxton, with the Rev. Daniel A. Olson officiating. Burial will follow in Glen Cemetery, Paxton.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 9, at Baier Family Funeral Services, Paxton.
John was born June 26, 1953, in Pana, the son of Charles E. and Bertie Elizabeth Bagley Schweizer. He married Barbara J. Shumate on Aug. 30, 1975, at the University Lutheran Church, Champaign. She survives.
Also surviving are his father and step-mother, Charles and Winona Schweizer of Nokomis; two sons, Charles (Lara) Schweizer of LeRoy and Alan (Sarah) Schweizer of Washington; two granddaughters, Kaitlin and Samantha Schweizer; two brothers, Dave (Becky) Schweizer of Witt and William Schweizer of Coffeen; his mother-in-law, Erma Shumate of rural Rankin; and numerous other relatives. He was preceded in death by his mother.
John graduated from Nokomis High School in 1971 and from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Mechanics. He was employed as a feed and seed salesman for the Ludlow Coop Elevator.
John received the UI Distinguished Alumni Award and the Alumni Volunteer Service Award. He was a member of the Beta Sigma Psi Alpha Chapter and the I & I Tractor Club. He was a volunteer fireman in Colfax and a former Cub Scout leader and soccer coach. He enjoyed tractors, NASCAR and St. Louis Cardinals baseball. His greatest joy was spending time with his granddaughters and helping his sons work on their houses.
