SIDNEY – Emily Ruth Hughes, 69, of Sidney passed away quietly at home after a long hard fight with cancer at 3 p.m. Monday (Oct. 8, 2012) in the presence of her family.
She was born Aug. 26, 1943, to James L. and Mary (Gordon) Buck, both deceased. She was united in marriage to Charles Bethel Hughes Jr. on Sept. 2, 1961, at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Philo.
She is survived by husband, Charles Hughes Jr.; sons, Scott (Cindy) and Andy (Tina), both of Sidney, Tim (Amy) of Tolono; and daughters, Theresa McDaniel of Urbana and Pam (Dean) Jefferson of Normal; 12 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; five sisters, Jean Finley, Mary Drucilla Keeler, Kate Johnson, Gloria Anne Lewis, Virginia Whalen; and two brothers, Bruce Buck and Pat Buck.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Paul Buck and Charles Buck; and a sister, Markie Miller.
She graduated from Homer High School. She served as the Unit 7 school's head cook for 28 years.
She also was an active member of St. Thomas Church in Philo. She also volunteered for many other community organizations.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Freese Funeral Home, Sidney, with the rosary being prayed at 3:30 p.m.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Philo, officiated by Father Bo Schmitt. The burial will take place immediately following in Calvary Cemetery, Philo.
