Freda Ponder

MAHOMET – Freda Elizabeth (Mara) Ponder passed away at 3:30 a.m. Friday (Nov. 16, 2012) at Illini Heritage Rehab and Healthcare Center.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Mahomet United Methodist Church, 1302 E. South Mahomet Road, Mahomet. Funeral will follow immediately afterward.

Freda was born April 7, 1926, in Scott Township, Champaign County. She was the daughter of Michael and Opal (Smith) Mara. She married John F. Ponder on Oct. 28, 1944, and he survives. She is also survived by a son, John M. Ponder of Wichita, Kan.; a daughter-in-law, Linda Ponder of Mahomet; one granddaughter, Lesley Ponder of Monticello; three grandsons, Nick (Joie) Ponder of Mahomet, Josh Ponder of Mahomet and Kylar Ponder of Joplin, Mo.; and two great-grandchildren, Grady and Makynlee Ponder of Mahomet. She is preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, one brother and son, Reid Ponder.

Freda was a graduate of Champaign High School. She worked at Burnham City Hospital as a nurse's assistant; she also worked at a nursing home in Urbana.

Freda and her husband spent time as foster parents for over 100 children throughout the years. She was a member of the Mahomet United Methodist Church, and in her younger days she was active teaching Sunday school. She also ran her own home daycare.

Most importantly, Freda was a loving parent and her biggest joy was her grandchildren.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials can be made to Mahomet United Methodist Church.
