HOOPESTON – Rodney K. Johnson, 73, of Hoopeston died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday (Nov. 25, 2012) at the Hines V.A. Hospital in Chicago.
Born Aug. 7, 1939, at Chicago, he was the son of Harry L. and Geraldine (Gress) Johnson. He married Sue Murray on Aug. 5, 1978, at Hoopeston. She survives.
Also surviving are his mother of Hoopeston; two children, Lisa (Jerry) Amore of Rossville, Ind., and Billy (Becky) Dewitt of Brookston, Ind.; five grandchildren, Emma and Ian Dewitt and Matt, Evan and Alyssa Amore; two brothers, Harry R. "Bud" (Sharon) Johnson of Hoopeston and Stephen L. Johnson of Bismarck; one niece, Stephanie (Shawn) Tuggle of Hoopeston; and two nephews, Karl (Jaime) Johnson of Herrin and Darrin (Bobbi) Johnson of Terre Haute, Ind.
Rod graduated from Hoopeston High School in 1957. He served in the U.S. Army.
He was the radio dispatcher for the Hoopeston Police Department for several years.
He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hoopeston.
Rod had been an active member of the North Fork Conservation Club. He enjoyed reading, was an avid Chicago Bears fan and loved spending time with his family.
Funeral services for Mr. Johnson will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Brown-Alkire Funeral Home, 309 E. Washington St., Hoopeston. Father Patrick O'Neal will officiate. Burial will be in Floral Hill Cemetery at Hoopeston with military rites accorded by the Hoopeston American Legion and VFW Posts.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Thursday.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
