MAHOMET – Janet Phelps, 77, of Mahomet was promoted to glory at 12:05 a.m. Nov. 27, 2012, at Carle Foundation Hospital.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St., Champaign. Lt. Colonels Ralph and Susan Bukiewicz will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Mahomet.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today (Thursday, Nov. 29) at Owens Funeral Home.
Janet was born Oct. 16, 1935, in Saybrook, the daughter of George and Zoa Deatrick McAtee. She married William Phelps on May 29, 1953, in Bloomington. He survives.
Other survivors include four children, Dianna Wilson of Mahomet, Kathy (Bob) Gumbel of Seymour, Larry (Joyce) Phelps of Champaign and Rick (LeeAnn) Phelps of Aurora; 15 grandchildren, Kristina Phelps, Shannon (Kim) Wygant, Tommy (Tara Smith) Phelps, Jorgi Phelps, Courtney Grove, Ashley Gumbel, Stephanie (Dan) Sawka, Emily (Kenny) Watts, Eric and Kevin Williams, and Michael, Tyler, Trace, Rylee and McKenzie Smith; 18 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, George Oscar and Donald Eugene McAtee.
Janet graduated from Stanford High School in 1953. She was a very active member of the Salvation Army Church of Champaign until her health declined. She ran the Christmas Bureau and was a Sunbeam Leader for many years. She was also involved in the Home League and League of Mercy. She greatly loved both her family and church.
She was considered the rock in her family and was always there when someone needed her. She will be sadly missed.
