Alvena Campbell-Monroe

Champaign – Alvena Campbell-Monroe transitioned peacefully at 11:46 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012.

She was born June 6, 1936, in McComb, Miss. She was raised by her special aunt, Emma Isaac, and her father, Oswald Campbell. She relocated to Champaign-Urbana in the 1970s. She served as a Mother of the Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church, Salem Baptist Church and the New Foundation Missionary Baptist Church. She had a strong commitment to prayer and providing a helping hand throughout the community.

She leaves to cherish her memory seven children: three daughters, Deborah (Adegbowale) Adeleke of Herceles, Calif., Faith Faye Simlin and Elysia (Ernest) Monroe of Champaign; four sons, Mohammed "Dexter" Monroe, Andre (Melissa) Monroe, Melvin Monroe and Michael Monroe, all of Champaign; six brothers, James (Emma) Cameron, Asro (Kim) Cameron, Charles Cameron, Lee Edwards Cameron and Lonnie Butler, all of Topeka, Kan., and Terry Owens of Champaign; four sisters, Jean (David) Thommen of Topeka, Kan., Teresa Owens of Champaign, Dorothy Curtis and Willie Jean, both of Chicago; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; and a goddaughter, Evelyn Hickman. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, a sister and two brothers.

Services to celebrate her life will be held at noon Thursday, Dec. 6, at the New Foundation Missionary Baptist Church, 922 W. Eureka St., Champaign, with the Rev. Nathan Williams Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Urbana. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service at the church. A memorial fund has been established in her honor at Chase Bank, account number 978689578.
