Armstrong – Mervin G. Frerichs, 76, of Armstrong died at 9:50 p.m. Saturday (Dec. 1, 2012) at the Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana, following a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).

He was born August 15, 1936, a son of John and Anna (Ackerman) Frerichs. He married Florence (Siuts) on June 19, 1955. She survives.

He is also survived by four children, Cindy (Charles) Koonce of Springfield, Kerry (Annette) Frerichs of Urbana, Randy (Patricia) Frerichs of Ogden and Peggy (James) Vermillion of Rantoul. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, Shane, Jennifer, Jeremy, Joshua, John, Katherine, Jordan, Acasia, Tyler, Kolton and Kylee; and 11 great-grandchildren, Jessica, James, Emma, Giselle, Gage, Abigail, Aleta, Evan, Ella, Emilia and Lillian. Also surviving are two step-grandchildren, Jason and Lindsay; and one step-great-grandchild, Aiden. He is also survived by three sisters, Ilene Ackerman, Marilyn Frerichs and Beverly (Lester) Wolken; and two brothers, Herbert (Lois) Frerichs and Lewis (Diana) Frerichs and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Frerichs; his stepmother, Louise (Osterbur); and a brother, Herbert John Frerichs; and one step-brother, Robert Osterbur.

Mr. Frerichs was a lifelong farmer and loving family man, enjoying any activity involving his kids or grandchildren. As a lifetime and active member of St. John Lutheran Church, he served on church council, a member of the choir, and numerous committees. He was also a member of the Martin Luther Men's Choir. He served 18 years as a school board member and president of the Armstrong High School board, and a bus driver for 25 years. He served on the Vermilion County Farm Bureau for nine years and also as Pilot Township supervisor. He served as a University of Illinois Assembly Hall usher for 25 years and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals and UI fan.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at St. John Lutheran Church, Royal. A prayer service will precede the visitation at 3:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Royal, on Wednesday, Dec. 5. Pastor Jay Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Kopmann Cemetery. Freese Funeral Home, St. Joseph, is in charge of arrangements.

A note to let everyone in the family know that they are in my prayers and know that with faith........all things good will come to Merv........I will never forget the chats that he and I shared and always looked forward to seeing him at the Rossville Holiday tourney...It goes without saying that he will be missed by all............Jim
