CHAMPAIGN – Peye (Peggy) F. Genes, 96, of Champaign passed away peacefully at 1:17 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 2, 2012) at Champaign County Nursing Home, Urbana.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday (Dec. 6) at the Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Church, 2010 Three Hierarchs Court, Champaign, with the Rev. Michael Condos officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery, Champaign.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 5) at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St., Champaign. A Trisagion will be held toward the end of the visitation at 6:30 p.m.
Mrs. Genes was born near Xilokastron, Greece, on Dec. 15, 1915, the daughter of Vlassios and Eleni Bonatsos. She married Frank A. Genes on July 17, 1947, in Greece. She and her husband came to the U.S. on Oct. 17 that same year and later she proudly became a naturalized U.S. citizen. He preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 1969.
Mrs. Genes helped her husband operate the Quality Cafe in Champaign from 1948 until his death.
She is survived by her daughter, Elaine (Howard) George of Champaign; a son, Andrew (Ellen) Genes of Coconut Creek, Fla.; two grandsons, Jeremy Genes and Adam Genes of Florida; one great-grandson, Devon Genes of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, all in Greece.
Mrs. Genes was a longtime member of Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Church, Champaign, and a member of St. Helen's Women's Club.
Staying true to her Greek heritage, Peye loved to cook for her family. She also enjoyed gardening and needlework.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Church.
