CHAMPAIGN – Stanley Spurgeon, 86, of Champaign passed away at 7:22 p.m. Monday (Dec. 10, 2012) at Presence Covenant Medical Center, Urbana.
The funeral Mass will be at noon Thursday (Dec. 13) at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 403 W. Clark St., Champaign. The Rev. Stephen Willard will officiate. Burial is in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon, just prior to the service at the church.
Stanley was born Sept. 2, 1926, in Ridge Farm, a son to Carl and Frances Wright Spurgeon. He married Betty Ondercho on July 7, 1951, in Danville. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Nancy (Jeff) Carrico of Douglasville, Ga., and Sally (Daniel) White of Elmhurst; and two grandchildren, Nathaniel White and Rachael White.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as well as the Korean War. Later, he was employed as a machinist with Central & Eastern Illinois Railroad and spent 29 years with the University Of Illinois as a locksmith.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Holy Cross School.
