HUME – Mary June Otrich Walls, 89, of Urbana, formerly of the Newman, Hume and Brocton area, passed away Thursday (Dec. 20, 2012) at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.
Funeral services will be at 12 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, at Joines-Appleby Funeral Home in Newman. Visitation will from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the funeral home Saturday. Burial will be at the Young America Cemetery in Hume.
Mrs. Walls was born July 4, 1923, in Dongola, a daughter of Mark E. and Vesta Hinkle Otrich. She married Earl L. Walls on Feb. 3, 1951. He preceded her in death on Aug. 19, 1992. A son, John Taylor Walls, also preceded her in death in 1993.
Survivors include daughter, Saliha Beth Alauddin of Charleston; and grandson, Tariq Alauddin of Madison, Wis. Two cats, Sir Thomas, and Ms. Kitty, preceded Mary in death.
Mrs. Walls was a graduate of Anna-Jonesboro Community High School in 1941. She then graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1945, and later attended the University of Illinois and pursued a master's degree.
She taught school in the Newman area for 25 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Urbana, and a former 35-year member of the Newman United Methodist Church in Newman.
Mrs. Walls enjoyed oil painting and traveling, and very much enjoyed making a home for cats during her lifetime.
