Minnie Hunter

CHAMPAIGN – Minnie Lee Hunter, 76, of Champaign passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday (Jan. 2, 2013).

Minnie was born on Dec. 2, 1936, in Edwards, Miss., to Willie Robert Dorsey and Lula Taylor-Dorsey.

Celebration of life service will be held Thursday, Jan. 10, at The Church of The Living God, 1109 N. Fourth St., Champaign. Bishop Lloyd E. Gwin will be the officiant. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. with services following at noon.

Minnie move to Champaign to live with her brother Lee Polk at the age of 11. Lee guided and protected his sister until she met the love her life, Leroy Hunter. Minnie and Leroy shared 56 years of marriage, later having 11 children with two surviving; the remaining children died shortly after birth.

When Leroy was asked what did he love and will miss most of Minnie, his reply was: "When Minnie was around, I knew I had nothing to worry about."

In addition, Minnie loved God and her church family. Minnie served as an usher at The Church of The Living God for more than five years.

Minnie was a self-starter, always willing to learn, acquiring skills like cooking, sewing and fishing. Minnie loved to share all these God-given talents with family, friends and neighbors.

Minnie was a hard worker, applying the skills she learned by being employed at Fontana Nursing Home and Lee's Chicken.

When Minnie's children were asked what they will miss most about mom, son Bobby said, "I will miss Mom cooking four meats for breakfast," and daughter Ieca said, "I will miss Mom hanging clothes on the clothing line outside, even though she had a washer and dryer."

Minnie leaves to mourn, husband Leroy Hunter; daughter Ieca Denise Hunter; son, Bobby Lee Hunter; sister, Della Mae Delong; granddaughter, Ratisha Carter; grandson, Antonio Chantez Carter Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Keyilah Ieca Carter, Jeremiah Carter and Aliza Neely.

Minnie was preceded in death by three brothers, Lee Polk, Charlie Polk and Willie B. Dorsey; and two sisters, Carrie Shivers and Irene Pendelton.

Minnie will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Rest in Peace, Rise in Glory, Mrs. Minnie Lee Hunter.
