CHAMPAIGN – Robert F. Pheris Sr., 81, of Champaign died at 6:26 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 12, 2013) at Provena Covenant Medical Center, Urbana.
Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St, Champaign. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Mike Mack officiating. It was Bob's request to be cremated. Burial of his cremated remains will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens in the spring.
Bob was born April 5, 1931, a son of William and Helen (Mack) Pheris. He married Helen Merry on Dec. 1, 1952, in the house where they still reside.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 60 years; one son, Robert Pheris Jr. of Champaign; two daughters, Rebecca (Jim) Gadbury of Champaign and Bonnie (Greg) Pruett of St. Joseph; six grandchildren, Shawn (Rich) Frost of Urbana, Jennifer (Joe) Modica of Virginia Beach, Va., Jessica (Brian) Whetzal of Virginia Beach, Nikki (Troy) Roberts of Sidney, Kendra (Phil Heidel) Keeler of Champaign and Stephanie Tatman of Champaign; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Shirley Foster of Huffman, Texas, along with a host of nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bernie Pheris; an infant daughter, Beverly Pheris; a great-grandson, Austin Deverell; three sisters; three brothers; and his faithful dog of 19 years, Snoopy.
Bob was of the Baptist faith but has been attending New Horizon Church in Champaign with his wife. He was a good Christian man.
Bob worked for the railroad for 46 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the BRC of A union and the 'Old Rails and New Ties' club. He was also an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears games. Bob also never missed a night of WWF.
