RANTOUL – Roland F. Payette, 86, of Rantoul left this Earth on the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
He was born April 11, 1926, in Cohoes, N.Y., a son of Joseph and Eva (Denault) Payette. He married Marilyn Green in 1949. She survives. From that marriage he had three children: a son, Ronald (Becky) Payette of Kyle, Texas, and two daughters, Julie (Dan Sleeth) Payette of Middleton, Calif., and Linda Payette Violas of Anaheim, Calif. He then married Charlene Augstin Gregerson in 1989. She also survives. Also surviving are three stepchildren, Cathy Gregerson of Rantoul, Larry (Ricky) Gregerson of Enumclaw, Wash., and Gary Gregerson of Rantoul; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two brothers.
Mr. Payette served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He earned his bachelor's degrees from Miami University, Ohio, and the University of Cincinnati. He received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati. He also had a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Illinois.
He was a high school teacher in the Cincinnati Public Schools, and a test specialist at the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, N.J., as well as an associate professor of education at the University of Illinois.
In recent years, Mr. Payette had participated in the arts, ballroom dancing, as an actor, and a banjoist in the First Arizona Banjo Band.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bible Baptist Church, Rantoul. The Rev Steve Sabin will officiate. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
