SAVOY – Murney R. Groff, 72, of Savoy died at 2:37 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 20, 2013) at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Memorial visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St., Champaign. Burial will be in the Eastlawn Cemetery, Urbana.
Murney was born April 6, 1940, in Urbana, the son of Carl and Betty Groff. Murney married Bonnie Newberry on Nov. 30, 1963, in Champaign and she survives in Savoy.
Also surviving are his daughter, Gail Groff Sikora of Savoy; son-in-law, Charles R. Sikora Jr. of Savoy; his brother, Robert Groff and sister-in-law Lois Groff of Mountain Home, Ark.; and niece, Angela Groff Owens of Eminence, Mo.
He graduated from Champaign High School in 1957. Murney owned Blum's Office Machines and started working in the business with his father and uncles when he was 12 years old.
In his younger years, Murney enjoyed bowling and fishing in Arkansas. Breakfast was his favorite time of the day and he used it to catch up with his friends and family.
Murney knew every back road in the state of Illinois and loved to drive the road less traveled. He was an avid follower of Fighting Illini basketball and football and was a season ticket holder since 1968.
Murney was very generous to his family and friends; for example, he liked to surprise them by showing up on their doorstep with peaches or strawberries from his back-road travels.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorials be made in Murney's name to the Boys & Girls Club.
