Florence Knittles

MELVIN – Florence (Fairley) Knittles, 83, of Melvin passed away Thursday (Feb. 7, 2013) at home.

She was born Sept. 3, 1929, in Roberts, a daughter of Ray and Anna Priesing Fairley.

She married Ben Hoekstra on Oct. 22, 1971. He passed away Sept. 2, 1988. Florence married Bill Knittles on Sept. 11, 1996; he survives.

Also surviving are two stepdaughters, Lisa Wade of Piper City and Julie Burkhalter of Chatsworth; one stepson, Ron (Linda) Hoekstra of Batam, Indonesia; a stepgranddaughter, Elizabeth Hoekstra of Winston Salem, N.C.; two sisters, Wilma Johnson of Cullom and Annamae Fairley of Champaign; two brothers, Alvin (Shirley) Fairley of Gibson City and Doug (Venice) Fairley of Roaring Springs, Texas; sisters-in-law, Julie Fairley of Gilman and Pat Fairley of Melvin; and many nieces and nephews and her beloved dog, Sammy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Donald and Clarence (her twin) of Roberts, Russell and Alfred "Fritz" of Melvin; sisters, Luella Johnson and Dorothy Fairley of Roberts, Edith Patrick of College Station, Texas, and Rose Eastin of Mesa, Ariz.

Florence attended her elementary years at Steel Country school, then graduated from Roberts High School in 1948.

She worked at Hicks Restaurant in Roberts before being employed by Home Shield in Chatsworth, where she worked for 29 years before retiring.

Florence loved landscaping her yard with her beautiful flowers. She enjoyed farming with her nephews. She loved collecting stained-glass ornaments and different types of clocks.

The family would like to thank Gibson City Hospital and Annex, Watseka Hospice, and the support of family and friends for all they have done to make her last days comfortable at home.

Private graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Gibson City for family.

She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
