CHATHAM – Betty L. Colwell, 82, of Chatham died at 3:53 a.m. Friday (Feb. 22, 2013), peacefully at her home.
Mrs. Colwell was born Aug. 2, 1930, in Jacksonville, the daughter of Arthur and Verna Middendorf Kleinschmidt. Her parents, a brother and a sister preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Glenn E. Colwell, whom she married on June 23, 1951, in Arenzville, Ill.
Additional survivors include her sons, Curt E. Colwell and Cary W. Colwell, both of Chatham; brother, Ron Kleinschmidt; sisters, Virginia Nickle and Barbara Beard; and three grandchildren.
Mrs. Colwell attended the University of Illinois and graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, Peoria, in 1951. She completed her post-graduate studies in Surgical Room Nursing at Cook County Hospital in 1952.
She was the director of nursing at Paxton Community Hospital until 1970, when she joined Parkland College in Champaign as coordinator of the Operating Room Technology Program.
She served as an officer and eventually president of the National Association of Operating Room Nurses for many years.
She retired from Parkland College in 1982.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Champaign.

Private family services were held at Chatham Memorial Cemetery in Chatham.
