Gregory Chew

CHAMPAIGN – Greg Chew, 63, passed away on Wednesday (May 14, 2014) at his home, after a courageous battle with cancer.

A celebration of life service (tribute) will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. May 24 with a family gathering to follow between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. at Urbana High School Auditorium, 1002 S. Race St., Urbana.

Greg was born June 20, 1950, at Detroit, Mich., the son of Harold and Maralyn Chew. Survivors include Debbie Zolt, whom he married in 1982, and a son, Alexander Benton Chew.

He is also survived by his brothers, Donald (Carol) and William (Susan); sister, Debbie (Dan); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Greg was an English teacher and drama director at Urbana High School for 35 years. He directed over 100 plays and retired in May 2010.

He was sponsor of Urbana National Thespian troupe, a member of the Illinois Theatre Association, Global Fest, National Education Association, Urbana Public Arts Commission, Joseph Royer Committee and grants for local artists.

He received his bachelor's degree in English and master's in secondary education at the University of Illinois.

To his family and friends he will be remembered for his brilliant mind, kind generous nature, great sense of humor and fondness of literature and theater. His illness did not define him. He greatly appreciated the outpouring of love and support from previous students, faculty, friends and family.

He was a great example of how to live a fulfilled life. To many he leaves a legacy that is now in each of us. We remain grateful to the wonderful Carle staff and physicians who cared for him.

In lieu of flowers, family and friends are creating the Greg Chew Theatre Scholarship Fund. Contributions can be made out to Urbana School District 116/Greg Chew Theatre Scholarship, 205 N. Race St., Urbana, IL 61801.
