Frederic Mansfield

CHAMPAIGN – Frederic E. Mansfield Jr., 85, died at 5:35 p.m., Friday (Nov. 14, 2014) at Heartland Health Care Center, Champaign.

He was born Sept. 17, 1929, in Connecticut, the son of Frederic E. and Anna M. Potter Mansfield. He married Nina A. Fox on Aug. 15, 1959, in Ludlow. She preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 2000.

He was also preceded in death by his two sisters, Lucy Whitney and Dorothy McDaniel.

Fred was graduated from Kents Hill School, Kents Hills, Maine, in 1948, and from Bates College, Lewiston, Maine, in 1952. After two years in the U.S. Army, he earned a master's degree in library science from Simmons College, Boston, in 1955. After a short time at the Widener Library, Harvard University, Fred was a librarian at the Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from May 1957 until his retirement in December 1992.

He was a member of the American Association of Law Libraries, Champaign-Urbana Chapter of Amnesty International, Illinois Track Club, Kennekuk Road Runners, Champaign County Humane Society and Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church. His interests included reading, running and dog walking.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Emmanuel Memorial Episcopal Church, Champaign. Heath and Vaughn Funeral Home, 201 N. Elm St., Champaign, is assisting with arrangements.
