William A. Jones

CHAMPAIGN – William Allen Jones, 86, of Champaign, formerly of Herrin, died at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday (May 24, 2016) at Presence Covenant Medical Center in Urbana.

Mr. Jones was a retired truck driver, having last worked for General Transfer in Decatur.

He was of the Baptist faith and a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was born May 15, 1930, in Herrin, to William Roy and Alice Allegra (Coleman) Jones.

William was united in marriage with Verba Denham on Sept. 16, 1950, in Piggott, Ark. She preceded him in death on July 7, 2002.

Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Adams of Champaign and Vicki Dunaway of Champaign; one son, William Gary Jones of Champaign; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Ralph "Pete" and Mary Ellen Jones of Herrin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and one brother, Robert "Bob" Jones.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 27, 2016, at Ferges Family Cemetery in Ferges, Ill., with the Rev. Robert McKnight officiating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin. Interment with military graveside rites conducted by the Herrin American Legion Post No. 645, Baker-Ladd V.F.W. Post No. 1567 and the Illinois Army National Guard Honors Detail will be in Ferges Family Cemetery in Ferges.
