Donald Keeler

URBANA – Donald Edward Keeler, 90, of Urbana passed away at 9:44 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

A memorial reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at Renner-Wikoff Chapel and Crematory, Urbana.

Don was born on Sept. 1, 1926, to Lynwood and Vivian Keeler. He married Mary (Druce) Buck in Urbana. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Craig (Robin) Keeler of Tolono and Mitch (Rhonda) Keeler of Philo; three grandchildren, Bobbie Jo (Shashi) Madugula of New Jersey, Ashley (David) Spradling of Murray, Ky., and Ryan Keeler of Philo; and one great-grandson, Oliver Madugula of New Jersey.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey Keeler.

Don enlisted in the Navy at the age of 19 and proudly served on the USS Iowa battleship. He did tours during World War II and Korea.

After his years in the service, he came back to Urbana to begin work at P&E Railroad for a few years, then went on to Hunters Lumber, only to start his own cabinet shop, Keeler Cabinets of Urbana. He was also a member of Carpenters Local 44 for 62 years.

Don enjoyed working in his garden, carving and telling old Navy stories.
