CHAMPAIGN – Melvyn Andrew Skvarla of Champaign, formerly of Chicago, born on Jan. 9, 1942, passed away on Tuesday (March 28, 2017).
As preservation officer at University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Melvyn was instrumental in all campus projects which touched historical buildings, including conservation of university properties such as Allerton Park Mansion, the iconic Alma Mater statue and renovation of Lincoln Hall, Memorial Stadium, the Natural History Building and Assembly Hall. He was a great friend of the School of Music as well. Through his involvement in multiple projects, his legacy and positive impact will live on with great respect.
A piano recital to celebrate Melvyn's love of classical music and uplifting spaces will be at Allerton Park and Retreat Center in Monticello at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 29, with a reception to follow.
Melvyn's memorial service will be at Cliff Dwellers Club in Chicago on May 12 (3 to 6 p.m.). Visitation will be 3 to 3:30, service at 3:30 and reception following.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the Cliff Dwellers Arts Foundation in Chicago, Allerton Park and Retreat Center in Monticello or Sinfonia da Camera, Music Department, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
