CHAMPAIGN – Marjorie J. Richmond, 88, of Champaign passed away at 1:10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2017, at Clark-Lindsey Village, Urbana.

She was born July 27, 1929, in Jackson, Mich., to Russell and Gertrude Laird. She married Jack Richmond in Champaign on Nov. 14, 1988, and he preceded her in death on April 17, 2011.

She is survived by many close friends, for whom she cared deeply.

She was very devoted to her husband Jack, and they both enjoyed Fighting Illini sports. Marge and Jack were two of the University of Illinois' most generous benefactors.

Through the University of Illinois Foundation, they funded the Richmond Teaching Studio for television journalism students; the Richmond Gallery in the Alice Campbell Alumni Center; the Richmond Endowed Men's Head Basketball Coaching position; and a gymnastics scholarship to honor Jack's participation in that sport. They also supported community causes such as the bell tower on the Urbana courthouse and the renovation of the Fisher football stadium which resulted in the naming of the field in their honor. In addition to the football field in Fisher, there is a park named after the Richmond family.

Before her marriage to Jack, Marge was a legal secretary for many years at Owens-Corning in Toledo, Ohio. She enjoyed music and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Champaign for many years.

Visitation for Marjorie will be from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2017, at Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive West, Savoy, and funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Eric Corbin officiating. Private entombment will take place at Mount Hope Mausoleum, Champaign.
