James Stinson

VENICE, Fla. – Mr. James Stinson, 91, of Venice, Fla., passed away at Venice Hospice House in Venice, Fla., on Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017. Mr. Stinson was born on Oct. 7, 1925, in Champaign.

Mr. Stinson was a proud Air Force combat veteran, receiving numerous medals and awards. He was a member of the Mighty 8th, 487th Bomb Group, 838th squadron, stationed in Lavenham, England. He was a tailgunner on a B17, flying 15 missions before the war ended.

Mr. Stinson retired in 1980 in Champaign and moved to Venice, Fla. He worked at the Sarasota Department of Health for 10 years. He enjoyed his retirement playing golf and woodworking as a hobby.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Stinson; sons, David Stinson and Jan Martin Stinson; and daughter, Julie Maguire.

Surviving Mr. Stinson are daughter, Theresa Dunlap and son-in-law Ken Dunlap of Young Harris, Ga.; daughter, Susan Harrison of Youngstown, Ohio; and daughter-in-law, Valerie Stinson of Champaign. He was proud of his 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

His service will be in Venice, Fla., at a later date. He was of the Catholic faith.

The family suggests donations be made in Jim's honor to the Hospice Support Fund, P.O. Box 1839, Merrifield, VA 22116. The family would like to express their gratitude to Venice Hospice House for their loving care and support.

He will always be greatly missed by his family, loved ones and friends. He was a true American hero.
