SPRINGFIELD – A. Edward "Ed" Skoog, 86, of Springfield died on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at Memorial Medical Center, Springfield.

Ed was born in Springfield on Sept. 5, 1931, the son of Alvin E. and Ella Joy Levanius Skoog. He married Edna Carroll in Springfield on Oct. 4, 1958; she preceded him in death on June 25, 2017.

He was a graduate of Springfield High School and Brown University.

Ed and Edna lived in the Champaign area for 40 years. The construction of the Assembly Hall, where Ed was the field engineer, brought them to the community. He was the president of his own general construction company for over 15 years, and then was employed as an engineer by J.M. Jones Company until his retirement in 1994. Following their retirements, they wintered in Nokomis, Fla.

Ed was a past president of the Champaign Contractors Association, Illini Playmakers, Illini Quarterback Club and the Mahomet-Seymour Boosters Club. He was active in the YMCA, Mahomet Little League, Net Workers (Illini Volleyball), Venice Audubon Society, Springfield Duplicate Bridge Club, and Theta Delta Chi fraternity. He became a duplicate bridge Life Master in ACBL in 2004. He was King Dad at the University of Illinois in 1986.

Ed was a Chicago Cubs fan and went to two World Series games in 1945. He was thrilled when the Cubs won the Series in 2016.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan (husband, Emmet) Fairfield of Chatham; two sons, Alvin E. "Rusty" (Janet) Skoog Jr. of Westfield, Ind., and J. Eric (Sherri Helberger) Skoog of Antioch; grandchildren, Kady Fairfield of Plainfield, Emmet (Katie) Fairfield of Geneva, Lauren Skoog of Houston, Texas, Mike (Moira Vekovic) Skoog of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Gunnar and Hannah Skoog of Antioch; brother-in-law, Dick (Anne) Carroll of Houston, Texas; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.

Memorial gathering and celebration: Family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, 2018, at Concordia Village Chapel, 4101 W. Iles Ave., Springfield. A celebration of Ed's life will begin at 3 p.m. at Concordia Village Chapel. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
