Teddy Eddleman

CHAMPAIGN – Teddy Georgia Eddleman passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 15, at Villa West in Champaign, surrounded by her loving family. She married Thomas Dwight "Dike" Eddleman on Dec. 25, 1945. Together they shared an unwavering dedication and loyalty to University of Illinois athletics.

Teddy hosted numerous social events and attended countless athletic contests. In 1988, she was awarded an honorary "I" from the Varsity "I" Association. Teddy and Dike were lifetime University of Illinois Alumni Association members. They were University of Illinois Foundation President's Council members. Teddy was a member of both the Fighting Illini Rebounders and the Fighting Illini Quarterback Clubs.

She found great joy in volunteering throughout her life. While residing in Gibson City, she was a major fundraiser for the Gibson City Hospital Annex. She was president of the Gibson City Hospital Auxiliary and the first woman to be named to the Gibson City Hospital Board of Directors. In 1979, she was named Gibson City's "Outstanding Citizen of the Year."

She served as a Girl Scout leader for her daughters' Brownie through senior level troops. Her scouting service also included years as a district chairman on the Green Meadows Girl Scout Council Board. She was a den mother and Cub Scout leader for the Boy Scouts of America.

She supported Gibson City schools by serving as a PTA president and secretary of the Gibson City High School Athletic Booster Club. In 1982, the Gibson City Boosters presented her with the Meritorious Service Award.

She served as president of the Sigma Chi Mothers' Association as well as the Chi Omega Mother's Association at the University of Illinois. Her service to others included volunteer work with the American Red Cross and Meals on Wheels. Teddy was a buyer and volunteer for both Burnham and Covenant Hospital Auxiliary gift shops.

As a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs for 68 years, Teddy served in many leadership roles. She was president of both the Gibson City Woman's Club and the GFWC Woman's Club of Champaign-Urbana. Teddy was seated on the GFWC Illinois State Board of Directors for 12 years. During her dear friend Jacqueline Pierce's term as GFWC International president, Teddy was appointed as one of her assistants serving at the national headquarters in Washington, D.C.

She was an active member of the First Christian Church of Gibson City, where she served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and superintendent of Bible school. At the University Place Christian Church in Champaign, she served as an honorary deacon and elder. She also served as an officer of the Christian Women's Fellowship.

Teddy loved to travel. She had memorable trips and cruises with family and friends to Canada, Mexico, England, Denmark, Sweden, Italy, China, Guam, Thailand, Hawaii and numerous islands in the Caribbean. Memories of annual family vacations to Daytona Beach, Florida, held a special place in her heart.

Preceding her in death are her husband, Thomas Dwight Eddleman; her parents, Neva and Ted Townsley; and her sister, Betty Earle. Surviving are her children, Diana Lenzi (Gene), Nancy Hambright (Randy), Tom Eddleman (Lynn) and Kristy Stevenson (Robert); her grandchildren, Brittany Pfeffer (Jason), Beau Wilson, Blair Chesnut (Andrew), Georgie Tipper (Bradley), Annie Hambright, Dwight and Tommy Eddleman, Samantha and Zachary Stevenson; and her great-grandsons, Taylor and Weston Chesnut.

A celebration of life service will be held for Teddy at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at University Place Christian Church, Champaign, with Pastor Kris Light officiating. The family will greet friends at 10 a.m. in the UPCC parlor. Private burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, donations may be sent to University Place Christian Church or the Dike Eddleman Athletic Scholarship Endowment through the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
