Jo Ann Rund

Jo Ann Rund

NEWMAN – Jo Ann Rund, 81, of Newman passed away Wednesday (Feb. 7, 2018) at Carle Hospital in Urbana.

Jo Ann was born July 15, 1936, near Brocton. She was the daughter of Doit and Lenore Hall Spittler. Jo Ann grew up on her parents' farm with her sister Virginia. She graduated from Brocton High School in 1954.

She attended Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, but her education was interrupted by tuberculosis and she spent several months in the Outlook Sanitarium in Urbana. Jo Ann later worked for a short time at the Edgar County Bank in Paris, Ill.

She married Donald Lynn Rund on March 10, 1956, in Hume and they lived in Crestview, Fla., for a short time while Don was in the service before settling down at their home south of Newman. Don and Jo Ann farmed and kept house there for the next several decades, and raised their son, Douglas Lynn Rund there as well.

Jo Ann was an exceptional house keeper and organizer. She sewed, knitted, crocheted, tatted and quilted, making many dresses, Halloween costumes, booties, sweaters and quilts. She enjoyed playing bunco with her dear friends and Thursday quilt club sessions at Walnut Point.

She was an avid mushroom hunter and counted the days until spring would come and her flowers would burst through the ground and she could grab her favorite mushroom stick and head to the woods! She loved Wisconsin, she loved the beach, but her heart was and always will be at home on the small farm in Douglas County. She loved to trim the bushes just so and fertilize and cultivate her flowers. She loved to mow and mow and mow her yard and kept it immaculate as long as she was able, often calling mowing her therapy.

She was a daughter, sister, wife, in-law, aunt, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend beyond the pale in every way. She fought through more than her share of medical issues and yet was often called upon to be the rock and save the day. She loved her friends and family dearly and will be a cherished soul that will not be forgotten.

Jo Ann is survived by her son Doug and his wife Nadine (Warfel) Rund of Tolono; her grandson Joshua and his wife Ellen (Vandeventer) Rund and their son, her great-grandson, Harrison Lynn, all of Tolono; and her grandson Lucas Rund, Nashville, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Virginia Barker (John) and by her husband of nearly 45 years, Donald Rund.

Visitation will be at the Joines Funeral Home, 401 W. Gillogly St., Newman, from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018, with a service at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at the Payne Cemetery located on the corner of what was her parents' farm, just a short stroll from where Jo Ann was raised.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Diabetes Association.

A grateful, heartfelt thank you goes out to her special caretakers, Tammy Bishop and Kandis Mills, for their caring service and friendship.
