Billy Saunders

DUNNELLON, Fla. — Billy J. Saunders of Dunnellon, Fla., died June 29, 2018. He was born to P.W. and Lucille (Conger) Saunders on Aug. 5, 1930, in Oakwood.

After graduating from high school, Billy enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1948 to 1951, Weapons Company, 3rd Batallion, 5th Marine, 1st Marine Division, proudly serving his country during the Korean War in such places as the Puson Perimeter, Inchon, Seoul and the Choison Reservoir. Sgt. Billy J. Saunders was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart. 

He attended University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, graduated from Illinois State University at Normal in 1959 and retired after 26 years of teaching industrial arts in 1985.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Margery Mariage. He is survived by his wife, Charlene (Sugie); and three sisters, Alice (Eugene) Poynter, Vicki (Larry) Prosser and Penny (Don) Morman.

Sgt. Saunders (retired) will be interred at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla., on Friday, July 13, 2018, with military honors.
