Anna Hess

RANTOUL — Anna Hess, 89, formerly of Rantoul, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family on Monday (Dec. 3, 2018) at Apostolic Christian Restmor in Morton.

She was born July 23, 1929, in Charleville, Yugoslavia, to Nickolaus and Elisabeth Willer. She married Dr. John H. Hess on July 20, 1957, in Chicago. He preceded her in death on Dec. 5, 2011.

Anna is survived by her two children, son, Dr. Art Hess (Kenda) of Rantoul, and daughter, Lydia Haan (Andrew) of Peoria; and three grandchildren, Anna-Kae Hess, Nikolas Hess and William Hess.

After surviving three years in a concentration camp (1944-47), she and her parents came to the United States in 1955 and settled in Chicago. In 1956, she was reunited with her childhood sweetheart, John, and they began their life together that following year.

Anna will always be remembered as a very loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She was a fabulous homemaker and always enjoyed those special “family times.” She especially loved to cook and share her German favorites during the holidays. Everyone looked forward to her Vanillekipferl crescents! She was an avid gardener, loved to work on needlepoint, was a very skilled seamstress and enjoyed completing German crossword puzzles.

While living in Rantoul, she was a member of St. Malachy Catholic Church and a member of PEO Chapter HA.

Anna’s life was about giving and serving others. It is so fitting that in the final chapters of her life, she was at Apostolic Christian Restmor among those whose mission is “Honoring God by Serving Others.” The family wishes to convey their profound thanks and appreciation to the wonderful staff at Restmor.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until noon Saturday, Dec. 8, at Lux Memorial Chapel, 1551 E. Grove Ave., Rantoul. A funeral Mass will follow at 12:30 p.m. at St. Malachy Catholic Church, Rantoul. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery and Mausoleum, Champaign.

Memorials may be made to Apostolic Christian Restmor, 1500 Parkside Ave., Morton, IL 61550; Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, 401 N.E. Adams, Peoria, IL 61603; or Henry J. Smith Charitable Trust for St. Malachy School, Rantoul.
