Elizabeth Hess/Left is Right | We're living in a close-minded society

By ELIZABETH HESS

Media outlets spend a lot of time pondering how we got where we are — in a divisive, close-minded society. What outlets like Fox News, CNN and MSNBC don't realize is that we are here, in large part, because our "news" isn't nonpartisan anymore. We know when we choose a news outlet, we do it because we want to hear prejudiced news to validate our own narrative.

How far back did we form our ideas and "prejudices?" Can we blame our ancestors for how we currently feel and act? Just because you're raised by racists doesn't give you an excuse to continue spewing hatred. I no longer buy the "it's how I was raised" argument.

A perfect example is a friend who works in Champaign and lives in Saint Joseph. I asked him what he likes about his community — he said it has "better schools." After a few follow-up questions, he admitted he and his wife were guilty of "white flight." (Defined as "the move of white city-dwellers to the suburbs to escape the influx of minorities.") It was the first time I had ever heard that phrase, but I was happy to hear him admit what others won't say.

Back to how we got to live in a divisive society. What led to a racist, xenophobic, misogynistic dimwit to win the electoral college and lead the free world? I get that people are sick of career politicians. They wanted "change," which Obama, more eloquently, promised in 2008. How could Obama's vision of change be so different than Trump's vision of change? It's simple: We "dared" to elect a black president.

The class, brilliance, confidence and charisma that exuded Barack Obama's every pore is absent from President No. 45. Try to picture Obama saying the following things Trump has uttered. You can't? Neither can I.

(About John McCain): "He's not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."

(About himself): "Sorry losers and haters, but my IQ is one of the highest — and you all know it! Please don't feel so stupid or insecure, it's not your fault."

(At the Democratic National Convention) Trump belittled the parents of a slain Muslim soldier, saying that the soldier's father had delivered the entire speech because his mother was not "allowed" to speak.

(To Billy Bush): "You know, I'm automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait. And when you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything."

(About white supremacists and protesters in Charlottesville): "You look at both sides. I think there is blame on both sides. You had some very bad people in that group. You also had some very fine people on both sides."

For those of you who hate Obama so much, and refer to him as "Obummer" or "Obama Bin Laden," what did he do to you? Did he pay off a porn star for her silence about their alleged affair? Did he mock a special needs reporter?

When Obama left office, he did it with class. He said our "top priority is to ensure our president-elect is successful." When a Democrat is elected in 2020, I think we can all imagine how smoothly and full of class that transition will go.

I'll leave you with the definition of a racist: "A person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races or who believes that a particular race is superior to another." Are you self-aware?

You should change the name of your so called colum to "I hate  President Trump!"

You are beyond pityful!  You never heard the term "White Filght"? Where have you been for the last 50 years?  You should stick to your 10 hour a week gabfest on the radio!

It could be worse, GLG.  You could be Dave Gentry and have to listen to this drivel every day.  At least the rest of us can turn her off.

Both of you should listen to her.  She’s smarter than you.  Just ask her.
