Local elections will be held Tuesday. Registered voters can wait until that date to cast their ballots or take advantage of nine local early-voting sites through Monday.

When it comes to spring elections, Illinois has a pathetic record for turnout.

Generally, about 20 percent of voters — sometimes not nearly that many — participate in elections for offices like mayor and city council as well as school, park and community college boards.

That's probably not going to change much. To slightly revise movie mogul Samuel Goldwyn's famous comment — if voters don't want to go to the polls, no one can stop them.

Still, opportunities to participate in these important local contests abound, particularly given the early voting.

Any voter may cast a ballot at any one of these sites during the early voting period.
