Now and then, someone claiming to be an American Indian writes to complain about our Chief Illiniwek.
If we choose to honor those who lived here long before we came, that should be accepted. If our portrayal is not accurate, then suggest ways in which we could make it more accurate instead of asking us to give up something so meaningful to us.
I might choose to take offense at the Indian's attempt to imitate a white man, wearing a shirt, driving a car, using a fork. "Oh, look. He ain't doing it right!"
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So is ugly. It's not what one sees. It's how one chooses to react to it. Please respect our motives. We choose to honor.
Please don't insist on alienation.
