Public nursing home is better choice

There recently was an unexplained death, this time at Helia Healthcare, a privately run nursing home on South Mattis Avenue in Champaign.

I hope all of you in Champaign County are paying attention to the upcoming vote to sell the Champaign County Nursing Home to a private company. It wasn't too long ago that CCNH was rated the best in the county.

Private for-profit nursing home companies like Helia make lots of money for their owners. The first thing private owners do when they take over a nursing home is cut costs by cutting staff hours, numbers of employees and by cutting supplies and food costs.

I was recently a rehab patient at Helia following a knee replacement. I left after three days because of the substandard care. I have reported the nursing home to the Department of Public Health.
