Chief's gone; time for a new mascot

Chief's gone; time for a new mascot

In my 45 years in Champaign-Urbana, I have been a University of Illinois student, employee, parent of graduates, and currently a retiree and wife of a retired associate professor.

If I were to name my favorite things about the university, none would include Chief Illiniwek. I am not an avid sports fan, but I do enjoy attending basketball games. To me, Chief Illiniwek was never the symbol of the university because sporting events are the limited venue for sports mascots or symbols.

Furthermore, for the past 15 years, I have become aware of the offensive nature of Chief Illiniwek and that it is time to change. At home basketball games, I am surrounded by nice people at the State Farm Center who still cheer for a symbol now long retired. This lack of empathetic understanding and resistance to change is very disheartening to witness.

It's time for students to choose a new mascot.
