Arming teachers NRA distraction

President Donald Trump and Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, have proposed arming teachers to prevent attacks on schools.

I'm a retired teacher who spent 45 years in the classroom and I condemn their proposal.

It is foolish to provide teachers with a bonus and a handgun to go against someone who could be armed with an assault rifle. It's irresponsible to try to turn teachers into armed mercenaries. This proposal to arm teachers is intended as a distraction from the need to ban military weapons, such as the AK-15, and enacting real solutions to gun violence.

I support the student-led movement calling for serious changes to our gun laws that presently allow just about everyone to buy a weapon capable of mass murder.

Trump and LaPierre support such laws and receive a lot of money for doing so. LaPierre has a $5 million-a-year salary and delivers large sums of money to Trump's campaign fund. Trump, who was a five-deferment draft dodger during the Vietnam War, is a verified pathological liar and a person who pays his prostitutes to keep quiet.

Together, Trump and LaPierre are making sure that weapons capable of producing mass murder stay on the open market so their friends and supporters can continue to get rich as America's children are shot down in neighborhood schools.

This cannot be allowed to continue. We must change the gun laws and stop allowing a minority to endanger the majority.
