Letter to the Editor | Increase budget for foreign aid

The international affairs budget is an important issue that needs to be discussed. Most of the country believes that a good portion of our national budget goes to foreign aid. However, this is false. Only 1 percent of our budget is used for foreign aid.

This is incredibly small and should be increased because it has substantial benefits.

Sen. Dick Durbin, I encourage you to protect the international affairs budget. By helping out countries in need, it helps grow our economy and leaves lasting benefits.

The U.N. states that developed countries should be using 0.7 percent of their gross national income toward foreign aid. The United States uses 0.17 percent, which is well below the mark.

The international affairs budget is extremely important and should not be overlooked. It needs to be protected so not only can the U.S. help developing countries, but can also receive many benefits.
