Letter to the Editor | Recalling an area farmer stampede

Today's wild fluctuations in grain prices remind me of a farmer stampede I witnessed a number of years ago.

I was working on a five-man gang, smoothing railroad track in the Champaign area. After a full morning of removing slow orders so trains could run again at maximum timetable speed, the CIV dispatcher in Chicago asked us to release our work authority in order for him to run a few trains. We locked our three large yellow track machines into the old elevator track at Savoy, and that's when the stampede began.

Suddenly, from all directions, cars and trucks filled the parking lot. Men on foot ran to the scale house. Did the bottom drop out of the corn market? Did the price of beans go through the roof?

"Oh, nothing like that," one fellow assured me as he hustled by. "We're just huge fans of 'The Young and the Restless.'"
