Letter to the Editor | Turnout was strong for annual prayer vigil

Thank you to the sponsors and participants of the recent Community Ecumenical Memorial Prayer Vigil.

This multifaith event has taken place for 30 years in our community. It enables people of different faiths to come together for a time of prayer and to mourn for the millions of lives lost to abortion since 1973.

We are grateful to the Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Church in Champaign, which hosted the prayer vigil this year. We also extend our thanks to the sponsoring churches: Community Evangelical Free Church of Mahomet, Champaign First Church of God, Urbana First Wesleyan Church, Holy Cross Catholic Church, Monticello Church of the Nazarene, St. Patrick Catholic Church and Three Hierarchs Greek Orthodox Church.

This year, we were fortunate to have Laura Paulus from the Martha and Mary Maternity Home in Chicago as our keynote speaker.

No prayer event would be complete without people to attend. In spite of the less than optimal weather, we had an excellent turnout, and we thank everyone who braved rain and ice to participate.

Next year's Community Ecumenical Memorial Prayer Vigil will again take place on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, which is Jan. 22, at First Wesleyan Church of Urbana. All are welcome. If you have not been involved in the past, perhaps now is the time to become involved. Please contact me at 217-762-2953 or shirley.kolb@gmail.com. Different churches host this event each year, and we'd love to have additional churches participate.
