Here today, gone tomorrow

More people know New York Republican Christopher Lee as a former member of Congress than knew him as a member of Congress.

The fastest sex scandal in congressional history came and went in the blink of an eye Wednesday in Washington, D.C.

In the morning, second-term U.S. Rep. Christopher Lee attended a meeting of the House Ways and Means Committee. In the afternoon, stories circulated that the married former businessman had sent a bare-chested photo of himself to a woman searching for male companionship in a Craig's List ad. Knowing he's a politician, it should come as no surprise that Lee lied about his age, his employment and his marital status. By early evening, Lee had submitted an immediate resignation.

"I regret the harm that my actions have caused my family, my staff and my constituents," Lee said in a statement.

That was that, at least officially.

No doubt, there will be those who will want to know more about the story, and it would be no surprise if the New York media do their best to meet that demand for information.

But this scandal will be known as much for its brevity as for its content. Actually, so far at least, there isn't much content. It's a sex scandal with no sex, just an embarrassing photograph of a muscle-flexing member of Congress seeking a female companion who is not his wife.

What was he thinking? It's pretty clear Lee wasn't thinking. Give him credit, though, for understanding the consequences of his misjudgment and sparing the public the details by stepping down promptly.
