A quick exit

You can't suspend me, I quit!

After testing positive for a banned substance, a one-time Major League Baseball superstar has opted for retirement rather than accept a 100-game suspension.

To put it another way: it's just another case of Manny Ramirez being Manny Ramirez. His sudden departure from the game is almost fitting, given the many personality quirks Ramirez demonstrated over a 17-year career.

Ramirez, a once-feared hitter and nine-time All-Star, must have thought he needed a boost from performance-enhancing drugs to keep his flagging career going. Just two years ago, he was suspended for 50 games for a similar violation.

Why take the risk of being caught again? Well, why not if it kept him in the game?

All he's enduring now is a little embarrassment, and that never bothered him much before.
