Auditor not minding the store

Where's Tony? — Part II.

Champaign County Auditor Tony Fabri very much wants to be an elected official. But it's pretty clear that he has no interest in doing the work required of an elected office.

That's why Fabri — once again — has been caught spending inordinate amounts of time away from the office. It was just two years ago that Fabri was first caught engaging in extended absences from the auditor's office.

He was then fresh from a November 2008 election to a four-year term as auditor, a post that pays in excess of $80,000 a year. The News-Gazette reported that Fabri rarely used the telephone in his office, which conformed with other elected officials' claims that Fabri rarely showed up for work.

At the time, Fabri, indignantly and incredibly, denied the clear import of the telephone records. But a follow-up check has revealed that Fabri once again is missing in action. The News-Gazette learned that Fabri used his office phone just 18 times between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011. That compares to other elected county officeholders who used their phones between 251 times and 2,318 times during the same period.

Fabri again brazenly denies any suggestion that he's not doing his job. While conceding he is "not always" at the office, he said he's "proud" of his record.

But no one is rushing to Fabri's rescue. Last time, many Democratic loyalists, while privately expressing dismay, refrained from being critical. This time, Fabri's fellow Democrats are notably silent in his defense.

County Board Chairman C. Pius Weibel's comments suggest he's given up trying to get Fabri to at least go through the motions of doing his job.

"... All we can do is bark, and you know how successful that's been," Weibel said.

Another Democratic board member, Brendan McGinty, who often has been at odds with Fabri, calls the situation "an embarrassment."

Fabri's chief deputy, Carol Wadleigh, could have confirmed either Fabri's presence or absence from the office. But she declined comment, and it's not hard to figure out why.

Meanwhile, Republicans are having a field day with Fabri's absences.

It's hard to imagine his attendance is going to improve anytime soon — or even whether it matters if it does.

Fabri is the auditor in name only, and the office seems to be running fairly well without him.

But he owes the public both contrition and an explanation. Instead, Fabri denies the obvious and brags about his job performance. He'll have a tough time selling that to voters in 2012, if he dares.

Time to make the position an appointed one based on professional qualifications and performance.

This professional politician and dishonest person must go.

Democrats put aside partisanship and cronyism and lead the way to ending this.

I agree with you on everything except the last sentence. I don't think that the Auditor's problem is based on party affiliation. It happens with Republicans as well as Democrats. The Auditor has been hung, and put out to dry by those in office, and the N-G. However, he is an elected official with a term to serve. Does anyone actually believe that he is going to run for election again with any hope of winning? The Auditor's Office seems to be doing the job. Is there a real need for an Auditor? Who are the Republicans, and Democrats lining up to replace him? Who does the N-G want for the job?

The opportunity to turn the position of county auditor into an appointed position was put to a vote during the last election. The people who voted in April decided to leave the job of auditor in the hands of the voters, and not the county board members.

At this point, either Fabri will try to run for re-election, or he will not. The Democrats and the Republicans have the opportunity to produce candidates who they will support for the job. Even as an incumbent, Fabri will most likely be required to collect a specific number of signatures before he can be placed on the ballot.

Personally, I would have liked to have seen the News-Gazette report on attempts to obtain more substantial information in regards to Fabri's overall job performance. One of the bloggers for Halfway Interesting.com managed to document his own FOIA requests.

My call to the Democrats is because I believe Mr Fabri is a Dem and peer pressure might help.

That is understandable and I would like to also suggest that individual residents contact the county board members of their district.

County board maps can be found on the County Clerks site, and individual registered voters can also look up the information by checking their voter registration as well.

The best way to reach out to the Democrats and Republicans on the board is to either call or email.

Thank you for calling out the crook. Is this not a case of fraud? If Fabri is paid and not doing his work, not showing up, which official would be the one to investigate and prosecute---Julia Reitz, as local states attorney or Lisa Madigan? Are they negligent if they do not follow through? Or, just party loyalists, who protect their fellow crooks. Also, if Carol Wadleigh is aware of wrong doing, isn't she obligated to report it. Why don't you folks at the News Gazette really get serious about our incompetent and failed government and press the matter?
